Jacobean topography of the city of Santiago de Compostela

Discover the architectural and artistic heritage of Jacobean character of Santiago de Compostela

Course description

The city of Santiago de Compostela, the destination of pilgrims on the Way of St. James from the Middle Ages to the present day, conserves a very rich architectural and artistic heritage, internationally recognised by UNESCO with its declaration as a World Heritage Site in 1985.

Part of this heritage is linked to offering physical and spiritual services to pilgrims - accommodation, places of leisure, apothecaries, soup kitchens, infirmaries, groceries, the market, etc., such as the Royal Hospital, the cemetery of Rúa da Trinidade or the Cruceiro del Home Santo, as well as places of Jacobean worship such as the Cathedral itself, the fountain and chapel of Rúa do Franco, the church of Salomé or the church of San Fiz de Solovio.

The contents of this MOOC are aimed at discovering and explaining them, offering the student to ‘walk’ along the same urban itineraries that a pilgrim of yesteryear would have walked. Upon completion, the student will be a specialist in the Jacobean topography of Compostela.
