Micro-credentials: enhancing lifelong learning and employability
What are micro-credentials? Micro-credentials are digital certifications that validate specific skills, competencies, or knowledge. Unlike traditional degrees, they focus on targeted learning outcomes, offering flexible, modular, and competency-based learning opportunities. They align education with the evolving needs of the job market, making them increasingly important.
The European approach to micro-credentials
The European approach to micro-credentials aims to enhance lifelong learning and employability across the EU. These short, flexible learning units certify specific skills or competencies, often digitally verifiable. They support upskilling and reskilling by recognising informal and non-formal learning, making education more accessible and adaptable to labour market needs.
The European Council recommendation promotes quality assurance, transparency, and portability of these credentials across borders, fostering mobility and career development. It encourages member states to integrate micro-credentials into their education and training systems, ensuring alignment with national and European qualification frameworks. The approach also emphasises the involvement of social partners and private sector stakeholders to enhance relevance and recognition in the labour market.
EUniWell courses leading to micro-credentials
As part of EUniWell’s Centre for Learning, the European University for Well-Being offers lifelong learning opportunities aimed at improving learners’ personal and professional skills in the context of well-being. Our courses span a wide range of topics relevant for your studies, the workplace, for social volunteering as well as skills needed to work towards sustainable and environmentally friendly societies. Please consult the EUniWell Course Catalogue for details.
How does it work?
EUniWell micro-credentials are awarded to learners who take part in relevant lifelong learning offers published in the EUniWell Course Catalogue. After passing an assessment, learners are awarded a certification in the form of an Open Badge through the EUniWell Learning Management System, ILIAS.
Open Badges are the world’s leading digital badge format, combining a visual image with metadata that verifies who issued the badge, to whom, and the competencies it represents. They are portable and unique, and contain detailed information about the owner, the competency, and its assessment, all of which can be verified in real time. While Open Badges are the format used to represent micro-credentials, they are distinct from micro-credentials themselves.
Learners can forward their badges to, for example, potential employers, who can then easily verify them in EUniWell ILIAS without needing to log in or enter any data – simply by uploading the badge into the verification system.
