Building knowledge about Ukraine through European University cooperation

04/11/2026 | by Louise Rigal | Inalco KNU

As Ukraine moves closer to the European Union, universities across Europe are strengthening expertise on the country. Through EUkraine Forum, institutions from EUniWell and 4EU+ have mapped Ukrainian Studies, connected academic communities and developed recommendations for the field’s future. The Erasmus+ project is now among 20 initiatives highlighted by the European Commission.

Understanding Ukraine requires knowledge of its language, history, culture and society, as well as its political and economic transformations. As cooperation with Ukraine deepens, European universities have an important role to play in developing and transmitting this knowledge. This was the starting point for the Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnership EUkraine Forum, bringing together Inalco and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, both members of EUniWell, with Charles University and the University of Warsaw, members of 4EU+.

Connecting universities, disciplines and expertise on Ukraine

The project, launched in September 2024 and concluded in August 2026, first produced a Situation Report on Ukrainian Studies, providing an overview of existing programmes and academic structures across Europe. It shows growing interest in Ukraine, but also a field that remains unevenly developed and often lacks stable institutional support.

These findings were discussed at the international conference Planning the Future of Ukrainian Studies in Europe, held at the University of Warsaw in May 2025, bringing academics together with institutional and professional actors. The resulting Conference Report connects the development of knowledge about Ukraine with the expertise Europe increasingly needs for EU integration, diplomacy, reconstruction, security and responses to disinformation. Promoted through both EUniWell and 4EU+, the conference also reached participants beyond the project consortium.

Finally, the Development Plan for Ukrainian Studies in Europe turns these findings into recommendations for universities, academic networks and decision-makers. It proposes ways to strengthen teaching and research, multidisciplinary approaches, mobility and careers, links with professional needs and sustainable support for existing programmes.

Together, these resources provide a clearer picture of the expertise on Ukraine available in European higher education today and practical proposals for developing the knowledge Europe will need to cooperate with Ukraine in the years ahead.

EUkraine Forum highlighted by the European Commission

This contribution has now been recognised by the European Commission, which highlighted EUkraine Forum among 20 Erasmus+ projects featured in its 2026 publication on support to Ukraine, showcasing initiatives contributing to resilience, human capital and Ukraine’s European future. EUkraine Forum is recognised in particular for its contribution to strengthening institutions and European integration, through teaching, research and academic cooperation on Ukraine.

As the project came to an end, its results show how cooperation between Ukrainian and European universities – and across alliances such as EUniWell and 4EU+ – can help build and share the knowledge needed for Europe’s long-term relationship with Ukraine.
