In 2022, the city of Leiden will be hosting the 10th edition of the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) and the European City of Science. The ESOF2022 conference, with the theme “Crossing Borders, Engaged Science, Resilient Societies” will be embedded in a 365-day programme of Leiden European City of Science, a festival celebrating arts, science, and technology with the aim of reaching out to the wider public and truly connecting science with society. Leiden University is one of the co-organisers of the conference and events throughout the year in Leiden.

Background: EuroScience Open Forum

ESOF brings together scientists, innovators, policy makers, journalists and educators from more than 90 countries to discuss current and emerging breakthroughs in contemporary science and their impact on our society. The main objective of ESOF2022 is to increase understanding of the different ways in which society is influenced by science and, on the other hand, how science is influenced by the choices, dilemmas and responsibilities that arise in society. ESOF 2022 will be about creating a sense of urgency among scientists, policy makers, media and the general public to engage more actively with science. ESOF2022 in Leiden will strengthen the societal dimension of European research - recognising that citizen engagement in support of science is essential to appreciate the benefits of science to the economy and quality of life.

The Call

Scientific research does not only take place in academia or in companies, it is a part of our society. ESOF therefore invites everyone interested in contributing to the dialogue on science and discussing the latest scientific results and their impact on society to submit their proposals.

In order to discuss the many different issues currently faced by our society in a coherent programme, ESOF2022 will address the following themes:

  • A sustainable environment
  • Cultural identities and societal transformations
  • Space for science
  • Healthy Societies
  • Freedom and societal responsibility of science
  • Action-based entrepreneurship and education
  • New paths for academic careers

For more information, visit the EuroScience Open Forum website.

Submit your proposals by November 30, 2021.
