Arena 2: Social Equality and Well-Being

Why Social Equality and Well-Being

Arena 2 focuses on core interdisciplinary issues related to human rights, citizenship and security, peace, as well as challenges to well-being in a global setting. Given EUniWell’s emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to well-being, this arena aims to advance a comprehensive exploration, analysis, and assessment of different perspectives on well-being and their contribution to an interdisciplinary research agenda. It is linked to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions; 4: Quality Education; 5: Gender Equality; and 10: Reduced Inequality.

What we do

EUniWell’s Arena 2 examines well-being from a global perspective, exploring its implications and policy options for improving well-being at local, national, regional, and supranational levels. This arena promotes interdisciplinary research that integrates various disciplinary perspectives to address core issues related to well-being while navigating the tensions between well-being promotion and the advancement of SDGs. The arena also focuses on promoting an ambitious education agenda that integrates interdisciplinary approaches to well-being and SDG 16. This includes institutionalising and enhancing well-being for students, university staff, and university governance, especially in the post-Covid-19 context.

What we currently focus on

In Arena 2, our current initiatives include:

  • Summer School on “Global Peace, Democratic Governance and Well-Being”: Held from 3 June to 5 July 2024 in Brussels, this in-person event gathered students to explore peace studies, democratic governance, and well-being in the context of global autocratisation.
  • Master’s Programme “Global Peace, Justice and Well-Being”: Set to launch in autumn 2025, this joint programme by the University of Cologne, University of Florence, Linnaeus University, University of Murcia, Nantes Université, and the Global Governance Institute aims to provide advanced interdisciplinary knowledge.
  • Social Talks series on “Fighting Discrimination in Europe”: A series of open webinars featuring expertise from EUniWell universities, addressing discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or age, and discussing anti-discrimination efforts across various sectors.
