Course description

The “Environmental Creativity Programme” addresses environmental and cultural challenges with a transdisciplinary approach, integrating art, design, environmental sciences and humanities. The program promotes active participation through workshops and site-specific project work, enhancing the entanglement between natural and cultural heritage.

This first edition of the Programme is titled “Artistic Practice for Planetary Well-being” and is focused in the city Florence and its surroundings, with a particular focus on immersive, site-scpecific learning experiences. The in-presence component will take place at Fattoria di Celle, home to the renowned Gori Collection, one of Italy’s most significant sites for environmental and site-specific art. Here, students will engage in a unique creative residency, working in direct contact with artworks, landscape, and local communities in a multicultural and transdisciplinary way. The programme fosters a critical and creative reflection on ecological and cultural issues, extending the concept of wellbeing beyond the human, including the non-human component within the beneficiaries and co-authors of the creative act.
The programme is positioned between EU and SDG priorities, fostering collaboration between European students and different disciplines (creativity + science + humanities) strengthening academic and social well-being.

Schedule

Online Session (18 hours frontal lessons)

from 23/03/2026 to 27/03/2026

The online session is aimed at providing a solid theoretical foundation and essential tools across three main disciplinary areas: environmental sciences, environmental humanities, and environmental creativity. It will introduce key case studies and outline the methodology that will be applied during the hands-on, in-person mobility phase.

On-site Session (Physical Part) 1 week of workshops, visits and project work in Florence and its surroundings

From 11/05/2026 to 17/05/2026

During the mobility, participants will have the opportunity to visit the museum system of the University of Florence and conduct an immersive experience in the spaces of Fattoria di Celle, which hosts the Gori collection, one of the most important European centers of environmental art. During the week, participants will be invited to conceive a site-specific environmental work.
