Course description
The course ‘Professional Equality between Women and Men: A Current Issue Approached from a Historical Perspective’ aims to educate students on the issue of professional equality between women and men.
This course is intended for students pursuing careers in teaching, providing them with an educational kit consisting of historical knowledge and a working methodology, presented in the form of a creative project. More broadly, it will be of interest to students who are considering their future role within a professional organisation in terms of ethics and environmental responsibility, always in relation to the issue of professional equality.

Part I: Women's work in France (6 hours of lessons)
- Quiz
- Glossary of professional equality terms: glass ceiling, glass cliff, etc.
- Current situation: number of French women in work, typical profile, challenges, issues and prospects
- Pioneers (from the 16th to the 19th century: Christine de Pisan, Marie de Gournay, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Code)
Part II: Women's work in the press in the 19th century (4 hours)
Work based on the MUSEA website of the University of Angers. Virtual exhibition on female home workers.
- Methodology of iconographic commentary
- Oral presentation of an iconographic commentary (poster or photo)
Part III: The work of women artists (4 hours)
- Current situation: the art world: still a very male-dominated world
- The pioneers: Catherine Duchemin, Rosa Bonheur. Study of paintings: self-portraits of Catherine Duchemin and Rosa Bonheur.
- Contemporary artists: analysis of the film ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’, Céline Sciamma, 2019
- Creative Workshop: creation of a poster and podcast on the theme of gender equality in the workplace
