04/12/2024 | by Lara Marie Andres
As 2024 draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the significant strides made by EUniWell in advancing well-being and strengthening collaboration across education, research, and society.
This year has been marked by tangible achievements—successful funding programmes, impactful student-driven projects, and strengthened partnerships across Europe and beyond. From groundbreaking research initiatives to key collaborations with global and local partners, EUniWell has built on its mission to shape the future of higher education and societal well-being. These milestones bring us closer to realising our EUniWell 2030 Strategy, which focuses on driving sustainable impact through collective expertise and innovative solutions. Let’s take a look back at these accomplishments and look forward to the continued growth of our Alliance, as we work together to make a lasting impact on both local and global scales.
1. Shaping Ideas, Creating Impact
The EUniWell Seed Funding Programme continues to strengthen collaboration across our member universities. The sixth Seed Funding Call resulted in the funding of 11 innovative projects, marking the first time all 11 EUniWell universities were actively engaged in one or more projects. The seventh Seed Funding Call followed with an additional nine projects, showcasing the Alliance’s commitment to fostering impactful initiatives. An evaluation of the EUniWell Seed Funding Programme underscored its effectiveness in generating creative solutions and nurturing collaborative networks within and beyond the EUniWell community. Among the highlights, 84% of project participants rated their experience as very good, and 80% of project coordinators launched completely new well-being related initiatives with new collaboration partners. This feedback motivates EUniWell to extend the programme further, ensuring even greater support for interdisciplinary and cross-border projects. The next round, the eight Seed Funding Call, will open at the end of January 2025. Don’t miss this opportunity to bring your ideas to life—stay tuned for further updates!
2. Paving the Way for Future Research
The conclusion of the EUniWell #Research project marks a significant milestone in the Alliance's journey, solidifying its position as a leading force in well-being-focused research. Supported by the Horizon 2020 SwafS programme, the project has established a robust framework for sustainable, collaborative research across EUniWell's member universities. It has introduced key initiatives such as the Well-Being Research Incubator, the EUniWell Research Training Academy, and the integration of Open Science practices, all of which are central to advancing research innovation. Over the past three years, numerous impactful courses and initiatives have been launched, enriching the Alliance’s research capacity and fostering career development for early-stage researchers. These outcomes will continue to support EUniWell’s long-term vision, driving future research efforts aimed at enhancing societal well-being on a global scale.
3. EUniWell Students Driving Change
Students play a pivotal role in the EUniWell Alliance, contributing actively to initiatives and shaping their own educational experiences. This year, some standout student-driven projects have highlighted the creativity, engagement, and global impact of EUniWell’s initiatives. One notable achievement is the EUniWell School Ambassador Campus, held in Florence, where School Ambassadors from across the Alliance collaborated to produce the EUniCast podcast. This podcast, recorded by students themselves, provides valuable insights into university life, sharing personal experiences and guidance for prospective students. Another highlight was the Service Learning project in Öland, Sweden, where international students teamed up to design a social media campaign for Station Linné, a research station focused on biodiversity. This interdisciplinary course, which blended remote learning with on-site work, allowed students to apply their skills in real-world projects, promoting sustainability and climate change awareness. These projects are only two highlights of the broad range of opportunities available within EUniWell. Students are encouraged to get involved and make the most of these enriching experiences. Don’t miss the chance to contribute to the future of Europe!
4. Strengthening European Bonds
In 2024, EUniWell significantly advanced its role as a unifying force within European higher education by fostering strategic partnerships and collaborations. As a key player in the FOR-EU4All project, EUniWell joined forces with fellow European Universities to establish a cohesive Community of Practice. This initiative aims to strengthen transnational cooperation and overcome persistent barriers to collaboration, aligning with the objectives of the European Education and Research Areas. Additionally, EUniWell deepened its partnership with the Global Governance Institute (GGI) through a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding. This collaboration not only enhances interdisciplinary activities in education and research but also leverages GGI’s strategic presence in Brussels to amplify EUniWell’s policy impact. These milestones underscore EUniWell’s commitment to advancing well-being through collective expertise and robust European bonds.
5. Universities at the Heart of Societal Change
EUniWell is dedicated to enhancing societal well-being through collaboration with local communities, as exemplified by the EUniWell Mayors’ Meeting in Nantes this year. Bringing together municipal leaders and academic representatives, this event focused on the role of universities in shaping urban life and boosting citizens’ well-being. It highlighted the importance of science-driven public policies and urban solutions that embrace sustainability, inclusivity, and civic engagement. By building strong partnerships between universities and local governments, EUniWell is helping create cities that prioritise residents’ well-being, tackling challenges like climate change and social resilience. The Mayors’ Meeting reinforced the idea that universities are key players in driving meaningful change at the local level. Through these ongoing efforts, EUniWell is reinforcing the link between higher education and societal impact, empowering local communities to address complex challenges with the collective expertise of academia and local governments.
6. Flourishing Transatlantic Collaborations
Transatlantic collaborations are central to EUniWell’s mission to advance well-being and education on a global scale. By fostering our partnership with the Teachers College, Columbia University, EUniWell builds on shared values of inclusivity, democracy, and interdisciplinary research to address global challenges. This cooperation proved highly productive in 2024, with shared activities and events already in development for 2025—keep your eyes peeled for what’s to come! Beyond this, EUniWell also leverages transatlantic partnerships to strengthen its global research and innovation framework. Engaging with organisations like the Hungarian Medical Association of America (HMAA), EUniWell focuses on advancing public health, mental health, and healthcare technologies through collaborative efforts. These initiatives create opportunities for knowledge exchange, professional development, and impactful joint ventures in medical research and education. Through such strategic partnerships, EUniWell expands its global reach and builds resilient, sustainable communities aligned with its 2030 Strategy for well-being.
As we approach the close of another year, it’s evident that EUniWell’s journey continues to build on a foundation of innovation, collaboration, and a shared commitment to well-being. This year has seen significant strides in strengthening our partnerships, from new transatlantic collaborations to impactful research initiatives, all in support of our EUniWell 2030 Strategy. These milestones are not just reflections of our progress, but pivotal steps towards realising a future where well-being and education are seamlessly integrated into the fabric of society, advancing a more connected and resilient Europe.
We are deeply grateful to our leadership, whose vision and dedication guide the Alliance, but even more so to our academic and administrative teams, students, and partners, whose commitment and contributions make our collective success possible. Looking forward, EUniWell remains steadfast in its mission to create a transformative impact on higher education and well-being, driving us towards a more inclusive and sustainable future. Here’s to continuing our work together in 2025 and beyond, making a lasting difference for generations to come!
