Prof. Juan Jorge Piernas from University of Murcia has been awarded the prestigious Jean Monnet Chair. Jean Monnet Chairs are specialised teaching positions in European Union (EU) studies for university professors, aimed at deepening the teaching and research of EU studies, as well as fostering dialogue between the academic world and society.

The Jean Monnet Chair titled The Transformative European Union Law Power II (TEULP II) aims to promote the study of EU Law among students, academics, and professionals, highlighting the impact that this legal system has on the national legal orders of EU member states and beyond, directly affecting the daily lives of millions of people worldwide.

Promoting knowledge and European integration

The TEULP II Chair will organise a series of activities, including official courses, conferences, seminars, public events, moot court competitions, and research projects, aimed at studying how EU Law strengthens European integration and promotes changes in legal systems both internally and externally. This academic project will focus on analysing the conditions under which EU Law acts as a catalyst for legal transformations.

Academic and research activities

Among the planned activities for TEULP II are three official undergraduate courses, three additional courses for a broader audience, three clinical workshops, three annual conferences, two research projects, and three monographs. These initiatives will generate knowledge on EU Law and foster dialogue between academia and society, including policymakers, officials, civil society agents, and the media.

Impact on the university community and society

TEULP II will benefit over 400 students each year, enriching the curriculum of the Law degree with a deeper study of EU Law, also taught in English. The project aims to influence EU policy-making and society in general by addressing crucial issues about the impact of the EU legal system on other jurisdictions. Key stakeholders, such as the Spanish Association for the Study of European Law (AEDEUR) and the Superior Court of Justice of the Region of Murcia, have shown their institutional support for the project.

International collaboration and benefits for EUniWell

The project will benefit not only the University of Murcia, but also the European University for Well-Being (EUniWell). Faculties from the 11 EUniWell universities will participate in the Chair’s activities, allowing students from across the Alliance to follow the courses, transcending national borders to reach a broad and diverse audience.
