Strategies to support future teachers’ well-being (FutureWell)

General Overview

What impact can university teaching have on the well-being of student teachers? Can university teaching contribute to the development of skills that are useful for the well-being of future teachers in the professional context? This project will adopt a quantitative approach to gather students' perspectives on this subject and design an evidence-based training session for academic staff, focusing on the key role that methodological and pedagogical choices can have on students' well-being.

Purpose and Significance

Research has increasingly focused on the well-being of university students, particularly since the pandemic. FutureWell aims to help shift focus from well-being as the provision of services to a broader perspective that takes into account the impact that the university environment as a whole can have on student well-being and the contribution that academic staff and study programmes can make, particularly for future teachers.

Implementation Method and Timeline

December 2025 – February 2026

  • Literature Overview coordinated by the University of Florence and Linnaeus University
  • Collection and analysis of practices  coordinated by the University of Cologne and the University of Murcia

March-October 2026

  • Design and administration of a self-administered questionnaire to investigate student teachers' perspectives coordinated by the University of Florence and the University of Murcia
  • Analysis of results, followed by an in-person meeting at the University of Murcia with faculty representatives and student teachers.

November-December 2026

  • Design of an evidence-based training session aimed at university teachers coordinated by Linnaeus University and the University of Cologne

Expected Outcomes

The project aims to deepen understanding of student well-being and the role that academic staff development can play in supporting it, as well as equipping future teachers with the relevant skills.  Moreover, the project will offer evidence-based training proposals for faculty development, based on the project results, to guide Teaching and Learning Centres in their support of university lecturers and administrative staff.
