The Modern Mediterranean: an ideal of well-being, a reality of crisis?

Doctor Andreas Guidi, Inalco

As a historian of the Balkans and the Mediterranean in the 20th century, Dr. Guidi completed his studies and research stays in Italy, Germany, France and the US, before joining Inalco in 2022. He is the author of the award-winning monograph Generations of Empire: Youth from Ottoman to Italian Rule in the Mediterranean.

At Inalco, Dr. Guidi chairs the M.A. programs in the Department of Europe and serves on the editorial board of Presses de l’Inalco, while primarily teaching the history of Southeastern Europe at the B.A. and M.A. levels. He has acted as principal investigator for two projects: one on the history of migration in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley, and another on the history of imperial borderlands for the Villa Vigoni French-German-Italian conference series.

"An international dimension has always been at the core of my career. Working with students from diverse backgrounds is an exciting challenge. I appreciate their multilingual abilities and adopt a pluralistic, critical approach to history. I aim to foster the students' understanding of and critical thinking about the politics of the past as they resonate with the present.”

His research interests include empires, fascism, colonialism, youth, generations, and migration. A second monograph is currently in preparation, examining the interplay of the post–World War II period, the Cold War, and decolonization in the Mediterranean through a focus on illicit trade.
