Peptides 4 Wellness: where peptide science meets innovation and well-being

Professor Anna Maria Papini, University of Florence

Peptides 4 Wellness is built on the idea that peptides are highly versatile tools for innovation. With the right infrastructure for peptide design and synthesis, young researchers can develop their ideas, overcome technological challenges, and translate concepts into applications. This vision is shaped by personal experience: after returning from Germany following part of a PhD, the need to build such an infrastructure from scratch became clear. Over time, work at the University of Florence and collaboration with students, postdocs, and early-career researchers from across Europe highlighted how essential this environment is for enabling innovation.

Across Europe, peptide chemistry often lacks dedicated academic infrastructures, with expertise largely concentrated in industry. Establishing this platform within an academic setting – and within a European University Alliance like EUniWell – is therefore crucial. It allows young scientists to collaborate, pursue both fundamental and entrepreneurial research, and move ideas forward without starting from zero. EUniWell’s interdisciplinary ecosystem, spanning chemistry, clinical research, and management, offers ideal conditions to train a new generation of collaborative scientists.

Well-being is central to this project. Personal and professional well-being are inseparable and stem from a shared sense of purpose – understanding why we do our work and whom it serves. When researchers feel engaged and valued, they thrive, contributing not only to their own development but also to a more responsible, creative, and sustainable scientific community.
