BESOWELL: Blue Economy Solutions for Well-Being
General Overview
The BESOWELL project (Sustainable Blue Economy Solutions for Well-Being) brings together five EUniWell member universities to explore how the Sustainable Blue Economy (SBE) – which balances economic growth with ocean health – can enhance human well-being.
Through collaborative research, education and community engagement, the project aims to raise awareness of how SBE can contribute to promoting sustainability, innovation and health. Key activities include interactive “SBE Research Cafés” and the creation of a transnational Community of Practice.
Purpose and Significance
BESOWELL seeks to demonstrate how clean and healthy oceans contribute to human health by ensuring safe seafood, reducing pollution, supporting clean energy, regulating climate and offering recreational opportunities.
The project emphasises the importance of individual and collective actions in sustaining marine ecosystems and reducing inequalities in access to blue spaces. It aligns with EUniWell’s mission by addressing key Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), including Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Life Below Water (SDG 14).
Implementation Method and Timeline
The project will be implemented over 12 months and includes the following key components:
SBE Research Cafés: Hybrid events hosted by each participating university, featuring short presentations, thematic discussion panels and co-creation workshops to foster dialogue and innovation.
Face-to-Face Meetings: Kick-off meeting in Murcia to establish the Community of Practice and plan activities; Final meeting in Nantes to evaluate outcomes and define future collaborations.
Virtual Community of Practice (VCoP): Bi-monthly online sessions to coordinate efforts, share insights and prepare for events.
Expected Outcomes
- A joint interdisciplinary publication reflecting the team’s research and insights.
- Proposals for long-term initiatives, such as a joint master’s programme or EU-funded research projects.
- A best practice guide for integrating SBE principles into academic, policy and community frameworks.
