The EUniWell Early Career Researchers’ Talent Hub workshop and PhD Scientific Days Conference were held at Semmelweis University on 8-10 July 2024. As part of the EUniWell #Research initiative, 19 PhD students from EUniWell universities were invited to present their research topics, share knowledge, create connections, and collaborate with other PhD students on well-being-related themes.

The EUniWell Early Career Researchers’ Talent Hub

As part of the EUniWell #Research project, Semmelweis University in a collaboration with Nantes Université organised the second in-person Early Career Researcher Talent Hub workshop on 8 July 2024.

The EUniWell Early Career Researchers’ Talent Hub supports the creation of a community of researchers united by their interest in well-being-related topics and provides a space where they can network, interact, co-create, and share their research findings while up-skilling and re-skilling in well-being competencies.

The aim of the EUniWell Early Career Researchers’ Talent Hub is to support the sharing of scientific knowledge and networking; to encourage talented young researchers to share their scientific results in an international conference and collaborate on well-being themes; to build a cohort of the EUniWell Early Career Researchers’ Talent Hub; and to facilitate international mobility between the EUniWell universities’ Graduate Schools and research groups.

PhD students from the Universities of Birmingham, Cologne, Florence, Murcia and Santiago de Compostela, as well as Nantes Université, and Semmelweis University were invited to participate in interactive workshops on the themes of sex and gender in medicine and biomedical research.

The guest lecturers were Emilie Camberlein from Nantes Université and Elena Soriano Molina from the University of Murcia. The goal of the training was to raise PhD students’ awareness of sex and gender issues in medicine and biomedical research. The trainers presented the biological parameters related to biological sex, that can have an impact on health and the development of diseases (i.e. genes on sexual chromosomes and hormones). The presentation introduced experimental models which allow to study the impact of sex related parameters on biological processes.

The presentations were followed by an interactive workshop dedicated to discussion in small groups, in order to evaluate how participants could be including sex and gender in their own research and which experimental model could help them answer their research questions.

PhD Scientific Days Conference

The Doctoral School of Semmelweis University organises a PhD Scientific Days Conference every year, where PhD students can practise their ability to present research results. The conference covered several topics, such as Cardiovascular Medicine and Research, Conservative Medicine, Dental Research, Health Sciences, Mental Health Sciences, Molecular Medicine, Neurosciences, Pathological and Oncological  Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Health Technologies, Surgical Medicine, Theoretical and Translational Medicine.

The participants of the EUniWell Early Career Researchers’ Talent Hub had the opportunity to attend the conference and give oral or poster presentations to the scientific audience on 9 and 10 July 2024.

Three PhD students presented section-winning presentations on the following topics:

  • Livio Tarchi from the University of Florence: Lag-structure in fMRI across three psychiatric groups: resting-state, state-dependency and clinical-behavioural correlates
  • Xocas Vázquez-Abuín from the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela: High FABP4 Plasma Levels, Associated With Low-voltage Area, Increases the Epicardial Fibrosis and Its Glucose Metabolism
  • Thibaud Dauphin from Nantes Université: Scalability of spheroid-derived extracellular vesicles production in stirred system
