Insights from the 2024 Conference of Student Bodies in Timișoara
In the vibrant city of Timișoara, over 100 students from more than 20 European countries gathered from 30 October to 3 November for the 2024 Conference of the Student Bodies of the Alliances. Surrounded by the city’s rich cultural and historical atmosphere, the event aimed to foster collaboration and shape the future of higher education in Europe. EUniWell was proud to be among the alliances represented at this transformative gathering.
Collaboration Across Alliances
Representing EUniWell at the conference was Pana Djamtorki (EUniWell Student Board Executive Member, Semmelweis University). The event provided an opportunity for student representatives from across Europe to exchange insights, learn from one another, and explore innovative practices designed to enhance student experiences and strengthen alliances.
The conference featured presentations highlighting the impactful work of the European Students’ Union (ESU) in advocating for student rights and influencing higher education policy. These sessions emphasised the historical role students have played in fostering inclusivity, accessibility, and quality within education systems across Europe.
A key highlight was a session led by Vanessa Debiais-Sainton from the European Commission, focusing on collaboration between alliances. Discussions explored how alliances can share effective practices, engage more students in joint initiatives, and secure sustainable funding for long-term success. Debiais-Sainton introduced the concept of a European framework for a joint European degree, presenting an opportunity to create inclusive, cross-border educational programmes. Key topics included quality assurance and the recognition of these degrees throughout Europe, emphasising their potential to transform higher education.
Open session discussions provided a platform for candid dialogue and collaborative engagement. Student representatives shared successful practices, explored potential partnerships, and addressed common challenges, such as resolving conflicts within student representation. These discussions were particularly valuable in identifying innovative strategies to bring back to individual alliances.
Looking Ahead for EUniWell
EUniWell is exploring how these ideas can be implemented within its network, building on its commitment to promoting well-being, inclusivity, and impactful education. For instance, the proposed joint European degree framework aligns with EUniWell’s mission to provide students with more cohesive and borderless educational experiences.
As the conference concluded, participants left inspired by the collective energy and shared purpose of their peers. The 2024 Conference of the Student Bodies of the Alliances reinforced the importance of collaboration and innovation in advancing European higher education. It paved the way for future exchanges and partnerships that will continue to benefit students and alliances alike.
