Multilingual, inclusive, innovative: AI’s role in language Education
Artificial intelligence is transforming language education at an unprecedented pace. To help universities navigate this rapidly evolving landscape, EUniWell's Thematic Arena Culture, Multilingualism and Well-Being has brought together researchers, teachers, and education professionals in a dedicated workshop. The aim of the Multilingual Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Language Education, organised by Inalco in March 2026, was to identify emerging practices, share experiences and promote approaches that place multilingualism, inclusion and well-being at the heart of AI-supported language learning.
Building on these exchanges, the Arena has now published a report that synthesises the key outcomes and provides an overview of the research, educational innovations, and institutional initiatives currently shaping AI and language education across EUniWell institutions and their partners.
A common direction emerges from these contributions: artificial intelligence should not simply automate language learning, but support richer, more inclusive, and multilingual learning experiences. Across the initiatives presented, AI is approached as a tool to enhance learner autonomy, improve feedback, facilitate access to language learning, and support teachers, while recognising that human interaction, critical thinking, and authentic multilingual communication remain essential components of language education.
This shared vision is illustrated through a wide range of concrete initiatives developed across the EUniWell Alliance and partner institutions. Readers will discover ongoing research on speech recognition and pronunciation assessment, AI-assisted language evaluation, multilingual virtual exchanges, corpus-based language learning, innovative teaching practices, and institutional AI strategies. Together, these projects demonstrate how collaboration between universities is fostering responsible and pedagogically meaningful uses of AI for language education.
The report also reflects the collaborative and multilingual forms of communication promoted by the Thematic Arena. Developed through an interactive and multilingual workshop combining scientific presentations, practical sessions, and peer exchange, it captures not only current research but also the dialogue between universities and external organisations working to shape the future of language education together.
