Sharing is a Challenge: EUniWell's Open Education series wins an OEAward
On 2 September 2026, Open Education Global named "Sharing Is a Challenge" a winner of its 2026 Open Education Awards for Excellence. Produced in a joint effort by the UNESCO RELIA Chair at Nantes Université, the UNITWIN-UNOE network, and EUniWell, the multilingual series received the award in the Open Practices category, which recognises "how we share": the practices that put openness into action.
Selected from a record response of more than 200 nominations from 49 countries, the series was praised for its innovative, collaborative approach, with particular recognition for its spirit of open and global collaboration.
Sixteen obstacles, one global conversation
Published throughout March 2026 for Open Education Week, the series brought together 30 authors from 15 countries to name and unpack 16 real obstacles to sharing, from academic legitimacy, to the fear of judgement, and the misuse of open resources. Written in six original languages and made available in at least English, French, and Spanish, each article was published simultaneously across three partner blogs under a Creative Commons BY 4.0 licence.
EUniWell voices in the series
Four contributions came from EUniWell member universities. Zoltan Lantos (Semmelweis University) drew on his own experience to explore reciprocity in sharing, while Benedetta Calonaci and Alessandra Gammino (University of Florence) offered librarians' practical advice on making open resources discoverable. From Nantes Université, Pierre-Antoine Gourraud examined the tension between the fear of plunder and the imperative to open up knowledge, while Paul Lyonnaz engaged in a collaborative analysis of the time challenges involved in creating and sharing open resources
The series builds on last year's "23 Good Reasons for Open Education", confirming EUniWell's growing role in advancing Open Education practice, not only its promotion.
What's next for Open Education at EUniWell
The 16 challenges identified will feed further collaborative work across the Alliance, including an open book compiling the articles.
EUniWell will keep advancing open education through collaborative projects such as:
- The recently published open modules on Social Media Literacy, providing junior and future teachers with practical, future-oriented tools to navigate digital and social media environments.
- CULTIV-OER-E, a seed-funding project, focused on developing and documenting the co-creation of multilingual multimedia open education resources on digital health. This project brings together an international team of experts, including Pierre-Antoine Gourraud, as coordinator, and Zoltan Lantos, both authors from the "Sharing is a Challenge" series.
In addition, a shared platform for facilitating the finding and exchanging of open educational resources across the Alliance is in the works.
