Vice-Rectors of the University of Murcia and the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv visit Semmelweis University
Prof. Senena Corbalán García, Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Murcia and Prof. Kseniia Smyrnova, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (KNU) visited Semmelweis University and met with Prof. Miklós Kellermayer. The Spanish institution joined EUniWell in March 2022, and contact with the Ukrainian university was established in the context of the ongoing war to provide effective support.
The guests were welcomed by Prof. Miklós Kellermayer, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and EUniWell project leader, and Dr. Ádám Orosz, EUniWell project manager at Semmelweis University. During the meeting, Prof. Miklós Kellermayer briefly presented the research, education, and student activities at Semmelweis University.
Prof. Senena Corbalán García, Vice-Rector for Research, spoke about the history and cultural heritage of the University of Murcia and looked forward to fruitful collaboration with the EUniWell partner universities.
Prof. Kseniia Smyrnova, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at Kyiv's largest university, home to some 30,000 students, spoke about the catastrophe caused by the war in Ukraine and the difficult situation universities and their citizens are in. In Sumi and Kharkiv, university buildings were partially or completely destroyed. The situation in Kyiv is slightly better, education has been moved to online platforms thus providing continuity. At the university, people are trying to remain optimistic, but the circumstances pose enormous challenges for everyone.
Prof. Miklós Kellermayer explained that Semmelweis University is already actively helping Ukrainian students to pursue their studies in the field of medicine and health sciences in the Hungarian, English or German programmes, and also provides opportunities for lecturers, researchers, and other personnel to continue their work.
The parties agreed that both bilateral cooperation between the universities and cooperation at the level of the EUniWell Alliance will be needed to effectively help the university in Kyiv, which is struggling to survive. For effective cooperation, EUniWell partner universities should agree on a framework for Ukrainian students that would allow them to join courses of the partner universities either online or in person. The creation of webinars and online presentations were also considered a high priority by all participants.
The meeting ended with a visit to the Georg von Békésy Biophysics Research Center of the Institute of Biophysics and Radiation Biology. Prof. Miklós Kellermayer showed the guests around and and presented the Research Center's top-class equipment. The guests were also able to get a clear idea of the centre’s basic concept, which aims to translate scientific questions from molecular studies to animal experiments to bedside applications.
