EUniWell Social Talks: From categorisation to discrimination in European migration policies

About this lecture:
Since the Maastricht Treaty, the European Union has been developing a migration policy, i.e. rules applying to third-country nationals. Numerous rules have gradually been put in place, enabling the emergence of European policies on migration, border controls and asylum. Recently, in May 2024, ten new texts were adopted, forming a new Pact on Migration and Asylum. This set of rules leads to an increasing categorisation of migrants, a diversification of controls and the establishment of widely differentiated legal statuses, leading, it is to be feared, to a significant risk of discrimination in the implementation of these rules by the competent national authorities.
