About this lecture:

Sports competitions are often organised based on nationality, leading to a form of accepted discrimination due to the specific characteristics of sport. However, does the same principle apply to professional competitions? And does it also apply when private entities are responsible for organising them? By examining relevant case law, this lecture aims to clarify the limits of legitimate discrimination in sport.

About the lecturer:

Giulia Mannucci is an Associate Professor of Administrative Law in the Department of Legal Sciences at the University of Florence, where she teaches Administrative Law and European Administrative Law. As Principal Investigator, she leads two research projects on Sports Law: the “Sportage” project, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, and the Jean Monnet Module “Sporting” (2024–2026). Her contributions to the Jean Monnet Project “EuroStatus” include the entry on “Sportsperson” in the Dictionary of Statuses in EU Law (2019).

Ippolito Piazza is an Assistant Professor at the University of Florence, where he teaches Administrative Law in the School of Law. His research focuses on Sports Law, and he is involved in several related projects, including the Jean Monnet Module “Sporting” (2024–2026). As part of his academic activities, he has delivered an annual lecture on Sports Justice in the Advanced Postgraduate Course on Sports Law at the University of Florence.
