Founded in 1769, Semmelweis University in Budapest has been a leading biomedical institution of higher education in Hungary and Central Europe for the last 250 years. Today, Semmelweis University is ranked among the world’s TOP 251 universities (THE World University Rankings 2022), and among the TOP 200 universities in the world in the field of medicine and life sciences (QS Subject Ranking, 2021). Semmelweis University’s activities are based on its three-pillar mission of education, research & innovation, and healthcare. The university provides world-renowned education programmes in three languages. Each year, more than 1,500 students graduate from Semmelweis University. In the academic year 2021/2022, more than 12,000 students from 97 countries on 5 continents study in four languages at the university’s six faculties. Semmelweis University is the largest provider of healthcare services in Hungary, its hospitals and clinics provide the highest quality patient care services, as well as practical teaching. The university’s patient care institutes and departments treat around 200,000 outpatients and 10,500 inpatients a month in four main clinical centres at nearly 40 independent units. Semmelweis University took a lead in the fight against the coronavirus when it emerged in Hungary. An Epidemic Committee and Steering Group were set up at the university, and 97 % of the graduating students volunteered to help in the fight during the first wave. In the field of patient care, the university became one of the largest COVID-19 care centres in the country.
