Course description
About twenty-five years ago, researchers pointed to what they called a global wave of democratization. At that time, shared values—like peace, justice, and the push for sustainable democratic governance—seemed to gain ground everywhere. Today, the geopolitical reality looks very different. Shifts in global power and growing regional and local conflicts have led to a clear setback in democratic progress worldwide. We’re seeing the return of authoritarian governments, the rise of nationalism and polarization, and conflicts both between countries and within them. All of this signals a retreat from the earlier momentum toward expanding democracy.
This is a summer course conducted online (onsite teaching may occur, but could be followed online) in August of 2026. In addition to lectures and seminars, students conduct a scientific investigation of a subject in the field of sustainable democracy and governance to improve his or her knowledge in this field.
Schedule
August 3-30; 2-3h sessions about 1-2 days a week, but with focus on independent studies to prepare a final academic analysis.
Requirements
No specific prerequisites, but should be eligible for at least bachelor studies.
