EUniWell Legal Clinic on gender equality – law students present policy recommendations at the United Nations in Geneva
From 22 to 23 January 2026, 13 law students from five EUniWell universities met in Geneva to present their work on gender equality at the United Nations. The meeting took place within the framework of the Legal Clinic on Gender Equality, a pilot project of the EUniWell European University Alliance.
The EUniWell Legal Clinic on Gender Equality is a one-year, practice-oriented course in which students from several European universities work in small groups on issues of gender-based inequality and develop concrete legal and policy recommendations. Guided by experts, they engage with international human rights mechanisms and EU law, take part in workshops, lectures and excursions, and ultimately produce policy documents that can be presented to bodies such as UN committees or Members of the European Parliament. In this way, the Legal Clinic combines in-depth legal and political learning with a tangible impact on debates about equality and social justice.
The Legal Clinic began in October 2025 with an introductory week in Konstanz. Since then, students have worked across national borders to develop policy recommendations on gender equality and digital discrimination. The Geneva meeting marked a key milestone: students presented their findings to the “UN Working Group on the Discrimination of Women and Girls”.
By contributing their perspectives as digital natives, the students offered valuable insights into how discrimination against women and girls manifests in digital spaces today. Their work aims to support and inform the policy papers of the UN Working Group by adding the voices of younger generations.
Special thanks go to Dorothy Estrada Tanck, member of the UN Working Group on the Discrimination of Women and Girls and Professor of International Law at the University of Murcia. As a key link between the UN and the Legal Clinic, she made this exchange between experts and students possible.
Beyond the academic programme, the meeting also offered space for intercultural exchange – from conversations among international students to shared meals, including a traditional Swiss cheese fondue. Overall, the Geneva visit was a highly enriching and educational experience for everyone involved.
